Superfoods: Benefits of Berries
Berries are one of the healthiest superfoods around.
What makes berries so special is their high level of phytochemicals that help protect cells from damage.
Here are some of the powerful benefits that berries provide:
Berries Reduce the Risk of Mental Decline – Researchers reported in the Annals of Neurology that compounds called anthocyanidins (a type of flavonoid contained in berries) support brain health as we age.
According to study author Elizabeth Devore, ScD, an associate epidemiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a professor at Harvard medical School in Boston, “These compounds, found almost exclusively in berries, are known to cross the blood-brain barrier and locate in learning and memory centers in the brain.”
Berries Help Manage Diabetes – Even though berries are sweet, diabetics can include them in their diet. Why? Because berries contain fiber. Researchers tell us that it is better to eat fruit whole rather than drink juice, because the juice is much higher in sugar and doesn’t contain fiber. Drinking juice will raise your blood sugar while consuming fiber-rich berries will help stabilize your blood sugar.
Berries Boost Heart Health – A diet rich in whole fruits and vegetables including berries can reduce the risk of heart attack and heart disease according to a study published in PLoS Medicine.
In that study, researchers found that people who loaded up on fruits and vegetables reduced their risk of heart disease. According to Registered Dietitian Nancy Copperman, a berry-rich diet may be particularly helpful for people who have a family history of heart disease risk. The chemical compounds in berries neutralize the systemic swelling that may accompany high blood pressure and heart disease, helping make your body healthier overall.
